3 Keys to Enjoying & Maximizing your Run

Dear R2Peeps,
As a performance physical therapist who shares your passion for running, I know just how essential it is to stay motivated and focused on your goals. In this edition, we’ll be diving into the topic of what makes a run truly successful. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a casual jogger, these three key elements will help you optimize your runs and maximize your enjoyment.
Did You Understand and Meet the Training Goal of the Run – “The Point”
Every run serves a purpose, and understanding “the point” of your training session is crucial for success. It involves hitting specific targets during your run, such as keeping your heart rate in the appropriate range, running for the designated amount of time, or completing the prescribed intervals at an appropriate intensity.
It’s easy to forget about these goals when you’re feeling great and get caught up in the excitement of running, or when you’re rushing out the door just to fit a run in with your crazy schedule. However, meeting these training objectives is what drives progress and helps prevent training error (which can often lead to injury). So, next time you head out for a run, take a moment to remind yourself of the purpose behind it. Stay focused and disciplined, and you’ll find yourself making significant strides towards your running aspirations.
How Did You Feel During the Run?
While metrics and training objectives are important, how you feel during a run holds immense value too. Your body communicates with you during every stride, providing valuable feedback that should not be ignored.
A successful run isn’t just about checking off boxes; it’s about enjoying the experience and finding your rhythm. Pay attention to your body and emotions leading up to, during, and following the run. Did the run feel just right, making you feel strong and invigorated? Or did it feel tough and challenging, leaving you drained?
Understanding how you feel during your runs helps you adjust your training plan accordingly. On days when you’re feeling great, it might be a good opportunity to push yourself. Conversely, on more challenging days, give yourself grace and opt for a lighter, recovery-focused run.
Did You Complete the Run? Celebrate the Accomplishment!
As simple as it sounds, completing a run is a genuine achievement. Some days, life throws curveballs, and just getting through a run can be an immense triumph. Acknowledge these victories. They contribute to your growth as a runner and as an individual.
Running is about perseverance, determination, and endurance in both the physical and mental space. When you conquer a tough run, you build mental resilience that extends far beyond the trails or pavement. Embrace the accomplishment of finishing a run, regardless of its intensity or duration.
The Finish line
In conclusion, success in running is not solely defined by performance metrics, personal records, or competition results. It’s a holistic journey that involves understanding your training goals, listening to your body, and celebrating each run’s completion. These three big things are interconnected and shape your overall running experience.
Every run brings valuable insights in the form of highs and occasional lows. Embrace them all, and they’ll contribute to your growth and evolution as a runner.
