WHAT ARE FORCE PLATES? AND WHY ARE THEY USED?

WHAT ARE FORCE PLATES? AND WHY ARE THEY USED?

Force plates are a tool utilized to measure ground reaction forces during various movements such as squatting, jumping and landing. They are essentially, a highly sensitive computerized weight scale that can provide real time measurements of metrics such as force, velocity, power, displacement, acceleration, deceleration and asymmetries.

Force plates provide valuable data that can be used to assess an individual’s current functional status. This can be important for a variety of reasons such as, but not limited to:

  • Baseline testing for strength and conditioning programs
  • Assessing progress over time with rehab and conditioning programs
  • Determining injury risk profiles for returning to sport

HOW IS THE DATA UTILIZED?

There is a wide variety of metrics that you can track with force plates. Results from testing help to communicate to an individual their preparedness and readiness to return to sport. It also allows us to make recommendations and modifications to their training programs to optimize their performance.

When looking at these data points, we are typically looking at these main factors:

Asymmetries between left and right sides (legs and arms) to assess compensation or abnormal movement strategies which may elevate one’s injury risk profile

Comparison to “normative data”. This is when we look at how an athlete performs compared to others of similar age, gender and sport. This allows you to see how ready for competition an individual may be.

HISTORY & GOALS

Our team will get to know you! We will gather all the information needed to align with your goals and the proper metrics and tests to record.

2

THE TESTING!

Start the Fun & Get Your Sweat on! We will get you warmed up and go through the proper tests to collect the necessary data that aligns with your goals.

3

REFLECT

After the test, your Performance Physical Therapist will review all of the data, and outline the next steps in your journey.

4

THE FOLLOW UP

Following your session, you will receive an individualized report, that will breakdown your results, as well as guidance and a potential plan to elevate your performance!

TESTING WITH INJURY

Testing will typically be performed when an athlete is able to perform impact exercises. The tests will be repeated on a regular schedule (bi weekly or monthly) until successful scores are achieved with regards to baseline testing, normative data and asymmetries. There is no additional cost for current patients, as it will be billed through your insurance.

NON injury related

Testing can be scheduled for individuals who are simply looking for more in depth data to drive their performance training needs. This would be run as a cash pay service for $150, and include a 60 minute Testing Session with a Dynamic Warm-up, Testing, and Review of Data.

can i do force plate testing if i am receiving pt not at r2P?

Yes! Patients can perform force plates testing at R2P even if they are undergoing PT at another facility.  Our PT’s can collect and interpret the data for you and your current PT provider to help supplement your existing plan of care. If you are undergoing PT at another facility and are seeking force plates testing at our facility, this would be run as a cash pay service ($150).
