Healthy Heart Supplements – Statins & CoQ10

Happy Leap Year! The 29th of February only comes every four years but it allows us the opportunity to discuss one final topic in relation to heart health and that is a popular supplement called CoQ10. 

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is found in almost every cell in the body and is a potent antioxidant that has various functions including energy production in the cells, supporting brain functioning and immune system health. CoQ10 has been shown to promote cardiovascular health through positively impacting heart muscle tissue, blood pressure regulation and having a supporting the heart before and after cardiovascular surgeries. 

Statin Meds

Taking statin medications reduces the production of CoQ10 and it is hypothesized that this could be the cause of some of the side effects of statin medications including myopathy or muscle weakness. Research is mixed on the supplementation of CoQ10 and the cessation of side effects caused by statins but many report a reduction in muscle weakness or pain and improved focus. The recommended dose is 100-200mg per day.  The good news is that there are minimal to no side effects (GI distress has been shown at higher doses above 200mg per day). One must be cautious with this supplement if they are taking blood thinners, chemotherapy medications and blood pressure medications and as always please discuss your individual case or concern with your physician team.
