National Papaya Month

The first time I ever ate papaya was in Ecuador. My family and I had traveled into the rainforest and the house we were staying in had a papaya tree in the backyard. We picked a perfectly ripe one off the tree and when we cut it open the flavor was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. It was sweet and refreshing and tasted similar to mango with the texture of melon. June is national papaya month and beyond the delicious taste of this fruit it is also considered to be one of the most nutrient dense fruits in the world.

Rich in vitamin C and packed full of antioxidants like lycopene and carotene it is wonderful for reducing cancer and heart disease risk. This fruit also contains a compound called papain which is a wonderful digestive aid especially when consumed with protein. 1 cup of the fresh fruit is roughly 70kcals and contains 3g of fiber and 300mg of potassium making it a wonderful and hydrating choice for summer.
