Fit Doesn’t Mean Ready: Physical Therapist look at Fitness Events

If you’re training for Hyrox, CrossFit, or an obstacle race, there’s something worth understanding before the start gun fires: fitness and event readiness are not the same thing.

At Rehab 2 Perform, we see this gap constantly. Athletes with strong baselines, solid training histories, and genuine commitment — who still break down because their preparation didn’t match the specific demands of what they signed up for.

Dr. Josh Funk breaks down the full framework in the workshop below.

The Three Pillars of Event Readiness

Every athlete we work with gets evaluated through three lenses: Competency, Capacity, and Conditioning.

Competency means owning your foundational movement patterns — squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, carry — with quality that holds under fatigue. Under stress, your body defaults to whatever pattern it knows best. If your squat breaks down fresh, it will break down worse at kilometer six.

Capacity is how much load, volume, and repetition your tissues can actually absorb. Tendons and connective tissue adapt slower than your cardiovascular system. Most preventable injuries aren’t bad luck — they’re capacity problems wearing structural costumes.

Conditioning is your ability to sustain output. Consistent 1K splits in Hyrox. Clean mechanics in the final wod of a CrossFit competition. Built through zone 2 base work, mixed modality finishers, and practicing transitions under fatigue.

Where Event Athletes Break Down

The most common breakdown points: back and hips from high-volume hinging under fatigue, knees from repetitive lunges and box jumps stacked on running volume, shoulders from overhead work in compromised positions. None of these are inevitable. They’re predictable — which means they’re preventable.

Raise Your Floor

The athletes who keep showing up aren’t chasing constant PRs. They’re building a body that handles the next event, not just the current one. Every competition is a checkpoint. Your preparation is the program.

If something’s been nagging or you want a performance-based assessment before your next event, Rehab 2 Perform offers a free injury consult with a performance physical therapist across the DMV. Book yours at rehab2perform.com/consult
