Fish Oils 101

Protect your heart & reduce internal inflammation with your daily dose of Omega 3’s.

You do not need to look hard to find many reasons why a high-quality omega-3 fish oil should be a part of your daily supplement routine. Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, pack a punch when it comes to health benefits. EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid, is primarily known for its role in heart health.

Research shows that EPA can help with reducing triglycerides and blood pressure and protect arteries from oxidative stress which, over a lifetime, can cause plaque build up in the arteries. There is also emerging evidence that fish oil supplementation could be beneficial in recovery from concussions since it has been shown to be extremely beneficial in other trauma brain injuries in terms of expediting recovery.

DHA or docosahexaenoic acid is the second fatty acid found in fish oil supplements and its main role is in the development of the fetal brain in utero and after birth in babies and toddlers. In adults DHA intake has been shown to have a positive impact on learning and memory along with reducing the risk of depression.

Due to the amount of inflammatory compounds we are consistently exposed to in this modern world, I truly believe that all adults should be taking at least 1000mg of fish oil every day. I do recommend keeping your fish oil supplements in the fridge since consistent exposure to oxygen and warm temperatures can increase the risk of oxidation.

I also recommend taking your fish oils with a meal since they are oils and taking them on an empty stomach can cause reflux and result in the dreaded “fish burbs”. It is also extremely important to get your fish oils from a reputable manufacturer who has their products third party tested. This ensures that the supplement contains what it claims to have in it and that the product has no mercury or heavy metals.

Thorne labs makes wonderful fish oils. The Super EPA fish oil (https://www.thorne.com/products/dp/super-epa-sp608nc) is excellent for cardiovascular health and reducing inflammation and the Advanced DHA (https://www.thorne.com/products/dp/advanced-dha)  is great for memory, mood stability, and improved cognitive function. Thorne also makes a prenatal fish oil supplement which is highly recommended during pregnancy to assist with appropriate fetal brain development.

The only contraindication for fish oils would be if someone is on a blood thinner like coumadin or plavix or they have a blood disorder that makes them more susceptible to internal bleeding. In this case I would have them discuss fish oil supplementation with their physician.

Always feel free to send me any questions or concerns when considering supplements for yourself or your patients. In general fish oil is very safe and effective and should be a core supplement in your daily routine. In Health & Happiness, Jessica Murgueytio
