Build Your Lower Body Strength for Baseball
Featuring Dr. Ben Haefner, DPT | Rehab 2 Perform | May 2026
Lower body strength is not just about hitting harder or running faster. It is the foundation of every explosive movement on the field: the drive off the mound, the first step in the outfield, the rotational power behind every swing. As performance physical therapists, we build lower body programs that develop strength, stability, and durability in patterns that transfer directly to what athletes need on the field. The four exercises in this video do exactly that.
Why Lower Body Strength Matters Beyond the Baseball Diamond
These movements are not exclusive to competitive players. Whether you are a high school athlete heading into tryouts, a weekend recreational player, or an active adult looking to build functional leg strength, single-leg stability and hip control are foundational to how your body moves under load. Baseball training reveals gaps that most people do not know they have, and addressing those gaps pays dividends well beyond the season.
The Exercises and Why They Work
Split Squat Develops single-leg strength and hip stability under load. For baseball players, this translates directly to drive mechanics off the mound and deceleration when fielding. For active adults, it builds the kind of lower body control that protects the knees and hips during any athletic movement.
Kickstand Romanian Deadlift Builds posterior chain strength with an emphasis on hip hinging from a stable, offset stance. This movement develops the hamstring and glute strength that powers acceleration and protects against common lower body strains in athletes and active adults alike.
Lateral Squat Trains frontal plane strength and hip mobility, two demands that most programs underemphasize. Baseball players rely on lateral movement constantly. This exercise builds the hip control and adductor strength that support that demand.
Curtsy Lunge Develops rotational hip stability and single-leg loading in a diagonal pattern. It challenges the hip in positions that athletes encounter during pivoting, fielding, and base running, while also building general lower body durability for non-athletes.
When Your Lower Body Needs More Than a Workout
If you are dealing with knee pain, hip tightness, or recurring lower body discomfort that limits your training or your season, that is not something to push through. In most cases, you do not need a physician referral to start physical therapy in Maryland or Virginia. Our team works with competitive athletes, youth players, and active adults to address what is actually driving the problem and build a plan that keeps you moving.
