Bursitis in an inflammatory condition affecting the fluid-filled sacs, bursae, that act as a cushion between our bones and surrounding tendons.
-
It can happen anywhere throughout the body, but is commonly found in the shoulder, hip and elbow.
-
The subacromial bursa is commonly involved in rotator cuff and other shoulder pathologies.
-
The trochanteric bursa sits on the lateral aspect of the hip and is commonly irritated with activities such as running, hiking, and weight lifting.
-
Symptoms vary from person to person but typically include at least one of the following symptoms
-
Pain with movement of the joint
-
Pain with pressure around the joint
-
Swelling
-
Redness
-
Aching/discomfort while at rest
-
Bursitis is typically caused by repetitive motions that cause excessive strain and friction on the bursa over time.
-
Treatment is usually initiated through rest/activity modification, ice and anti-inflammatory/pain medications.
-
Physical therapy can be utilized to promote optimal ROM, flexibility and strength of the joint and surrounding soft tissue around the bursa
