Pelvic Health – Myth Busting

Myths About Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: Busted

As a pelvic health physical therapist—and a mom of young kids myself—I’ve had more conversations than I can count with women who are unsure, nervous, or even a little embarrassed to talk about pelvic health. I get it. These topics aren’t always easy to bring up, even with close friends, let alone a medical provider.

But the truth is, pelvic floor issues are incredibly common, very treatable, and absolutely nothing to feel ashamed about. Unfortunately, myths and misinformation often stop people from getting the help they need.

Let’s clear the air and bust some of the most common misconceptions I hear in the clinic every day.

Myth #1: “Pelvic floor physical therapy is just for new moms.”

TRUTH:: While we absolutely help women during and after pregnancy, pelvic floor issues affect people of all ages and genders.

We support individuals dealing with:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Constipation and bowel dysfunction
  • Organ prolapse
  • Post-surgical recovery (including prostatectomy and hysterectomy)

You don’t have to be a new mom to benefit from pelvic floor PT.

Myth #2: “You’ll have to do weird or invasive things.”

Truth: Everything we do is explained ahead of time, and your comfort is our top priority. Internal assessments are just one option—and only ever done with your full consent.

Many treatment sessions focus on:

  • Breathing and posture techniques
  • Functional movement and exercise
  • External manual therapy
  • Lifestyle and behavior education
  • Pelvic floor coordination and control strategies

You’re always in control of your care plan. A lot can be done without being invasive.

Myth #3: “Just do more Kegels and you’ll be fine.”

Truth: Kegels can be complicated and potentially only part of the solution or not at all.

Some pelvic floors are overactive and need relaxation, not strengthening. Others lack proper coordination. And in many cases, people need to strengthen other muscle groups—like the glutes, hips, or core—to support better pelvic function.

Pelvic floor PT helps determine what your body needs, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Myth #4: “It’s normal to leak a little after kids.”

Truth: Leaking might be common, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal—or something you have to live with.

Peeing during a workout, sneezing, or chasing after your kids can feel frustrating or embarrassing. Pelvic floor PT helps you understand why it’s happening and gives you the tools to correct it through strength, coordination, and proper body mechanics.

Myth #5: “Pelvic floor issues only happen to women.”

Truth: Anyone with a pelvis can have pelvic floor dysfunction.

We treat men, women, and non-binary individuals. Some common reasons men seek pelvic health PT include:

  • Recovery from prostate surgery
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pain with ejaculation or intercourse
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination

Everyone deserves access to pelvic health support.

Myth #6: “You need a referral to see a pelvic floor PT.”

Truth: Normally, you can schedule physical therapy directly—no referral needed.

That means you can get started sooner and begin the process of learning about your body, managing symptoms, and returning to your normal activities.
