Support Your Immune System with Supplementation during the Winter

Cold and flu season are still upon us and while the best way to prevent getting sick is adequate sleep and handwashing, proper supplementation can also help! Vitamin D has a big role in immune system efficacy.

We typically acquire Vitamin D from the sunlight interacting with a cholesterol-based precursor under our skin, but even on a bright sunny day we can only make about 20% of what the body needs. The only natural dietary sources of vitamin D are whole milk dairy products and fatty fish like salmon and arctic char.

During winter I recommend taking between 1000-2000 IU of vitamin D, with added vitamin K2 to enhance absorption, every day. I use Thorne Labs Vitamin D with K2.

This Vitamin plays a massive role in bone health due to vitamin D’s role in regulating calcium and phosphorus balance including calcium absorption in the gut. This Vitamin also plays a role in our immune system, and helps us maintain healthy hormone balance. It is challenging to acquire adequate vitamin D from our food so supplementation is recommended especially in the winter months and if you are found to be deficient.

Unless your physician instructs you otherwise, 1000-2000IU each day should be sufficient in giving the body what it needs to function properly especially if paired with vitamin D containing foods and 20-30 minutes of sun exposure to your arms, hands, legs, and face each day. Do your bones, teeth, heart, gut and whole body a favor and ensure you are getting adequate vitamin D every day!
