Meet Dr. Sean Tyrell, DPT

Why did you want to become involved in physical therapy?

As far back as I can remember I have always been fascinated with movement. As a kid, zoology seemed to be my calling. I was just mesmerized by the amazing power, speed, strength and endurance some animals possessed. As I grew older, however, I became more intrigued by the function of the human body. As a competitive runner in high school, I knew I wanted to be a physical therapist after suffering from my own set of injuries and after repeated bouts of pain. Fortunately I had a great PT who took the time to educate and empower me to become a more resilient version of myself. After this experience, my goal was to put forth the effort to also become an effective physical therapist in order to empower others to lead happier and healthier lives.

What is your background?

I grew up surrounded by the Adirondack mountains near Plattsburgh, New York. I was not what you would call an aggressive kid, but I sure did have a lot of energy that needed to be burned up! As a competitive athlete, my main love was running. I ran cross country and track and field throughout middle and high school. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. After high school, I attended the University at Buffalo and earned my B.S. in Exercise Science, followed by a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. At that time, the iron game grabbed my attention. Throughout undergraduate and graduate school, I dabbled in all areas of resistance training including bodybuilding, powerlifting, crossfit, olympic weightlifting, and kettlebells. While earning my DPT, I worked as a physical preparation coach for the Absolute Performance Company in Buffalo. While employed, I gained valuable experience in both Crossfit style training and athletic development for individuals of all ages and athletic backgrounds.

What is your specialty or niche when it comes to physical therapy?

As a physical therapist, I truly believe in the power of movement to promote overall health, wellness and performance regardless of age or athletic ability. I am very excited and passionate about working with individuals of all different athletic populations and those managing running related injuries. I have had a decent amount of experience working with injured runners as a physical preparation coach and a student clinician. I am excited to continue these efforts with Rehab 2 Perform.

What are you most looking forward to in joining the Rehab 2 Perform™ team?

I am most looking forward to being part of a team of competent, caring and passionate individuals who provide an excellent environment to learn and grow as a clinician. I am excited to join a team who believes in advancing our community with education, health and wellness. I plan to expand on my knowledge and experience in order to become an important resource for both my colleagues and the community.

What are your plans on trying to engage and connect with the community?

I plan to enter the clinic everyday with a smile on my face and a greeting for every person I see. On day one I will happily meet all staff, clients, patients and athletes and begin working to build a strong professional relationship. I believe that to be an effective therapist I must first be a good communicator. I will strive to treat the individual, not the condition. I will promote educational content on social media to help connect and engage with the community. I look forward to participating in athletic events outside of the clinic with the R2P team and striving to become an active part of local athletics to further promote health, wellness and performance.
