Building a Foundation in ACL Rehab: The Basics and Beyond

Dr. Steph Allen, PT, DPT, OCS

The Presentation

This presentation is meant to demystify some of the complexity that we tend to add to ACL rehab. We will revisit the early and mid stages of ACL rehab through the lens of principles vs. methods. Through case studies, we will practice having conversations and making decisions based on our evidence informed "whys."

  • Realize the gap that often still exists between the level of preparedness at the completion of ACL rehab and that which is required of the individual for sport.
  • Utilize principles to guide treatment in each phase of ACL rehab.
  • Gain confidence with having conversations surrounding return to running or sport, as well as the decisions of progressing from lower to higher level tasks in rehab via case study application.
  • Decrease some of the fear surrounding the complexity and nuance of ACL rehab, and have some fun!

About

Dr. Steph Allen is currently a Physical Therapist at Boston Physical Therapy & Wellness, as well as Co-Founder of The Level Up Initiative. Following graduating Ithaca College with her DPT, Steph has primarily focused her time on developing her skills in strength and conditioning training, in addition to running biomechanics, specializing in ACL recovery and return to sport rehabilitation.

Through her passion in these areas, she plans to incorporate both activities into her patient care, where appropriate. Patient interaction and human connection are both very important aspects of Steph's rehab and treatment process, as she believes in the importance of building a strong level of trust between her and her patients while helping them return to physical activity, fitness, and sports.

Rehabilitating The Throwing Athlete: Mastering the Fundamentals and Return to Throwing Progressions

Dr. Zach Baker, PT, DPT, SCS

The Presentation

The presentation will organize the process and highlight the priorities of taking an individual from the acute phase of an injury through the final phase of returning to throwing. It will help create a logical sequence for progressions, as well as, a hierarchy of movement demands and physical competencies. In the end, you will feel comfortable and competent with creating a needs analysis for your throwing athlete and implementing an evidence informed return to sport program with simple checklists throughout the process.

  • Define the phases of throwing a ball overhead and appreciate the physical demands within each phase of throwing.
  • Create a needs analysis for an injured athlete returning to throwing
  • Familiarize ourselves with interval throwing programs and objective measures to utilize when tracking progress throughout the rehabilitation and performance phases
  • Implement an evidence informed program to progress through the phases of rehabilitation to full return to sport

The Movement vs. Muscle Conundrum: Has The Pendulum Swung Too Far

Dr. Jarred Boyd, PT, DPT, ATC, SCS, CSCS

The Presentation

The intent of the presentation is to discuss when "training" muscles vs. movements should be considered in the reconditioning and physical preparation process. Understanding, the variables and contextual factors that revolve around such a divisive concept is critical in improving decision making. This presentation will equip individuals with an additional lens for discerning the relevance of kinetics and kinematics.

  • Discuss the relevance of kinematics vs. kinetics revolving reconditioning of the injured athlete
  • Describe the concept of training movement vs. muscles from an exercise application premise
  • Dissect the variables that coalesce into the end stage goal(s) of return to play
  • Delineate the entities of dynamic systems theory and where they fit on the movement vs. muscle spectrum

Anti-Racism & Allyship:  History, Racial Trauma, Implicit Bias and How to be an Ally in Health and Wellness

Dr. Jennifer Hutton, PT, DPT

The Presentation

Anti-Racism and Allyship is a workshop designed to facilitate a more informed perspective of a health and wellness professional’s position on allyship for BIPOC individuals. It discusses the connection between racial trauma and health disparities and gives action steps and tools for health and wellness professionals to become effective allies.

  • Discuss the history of the healthcare system during slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights eras
  • Articulate how racial trauma has an effect on physical and mental health
  • Break down the stages of allyship and action steps for each stage
  • Resources (books, articles, research) to further your antiracism work personally and professionally

About

Dr. Jennifer Hutton, aka Dr. Jpop, is a pediatric physical therapist from Nashville, TN. She graduated from Loma Linda University with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2008. Jennifer enjoys treating the developmentally delayed population, as well as children with neurological and orthopedic diagnoses, both congenital and acquired. While the world reminds children with special needs of their limitations, she believes they are all capable of the impossible and helps them see that their special gifts will help them be their best selves. In 2018 Jennifer became an instructor for RockTape which sparked a passion for teaching others. She is currently working on her own educational content for pediatric movement specialists.

As a Black woman, Jennifer knows what it is like to identify as different, and it has helped in her quest to be an ally for children with disabilities inside and outside of the clinic. Now she is educating others on how to be effective allies to BIPOC and other marginalized communities through her membership program Building Allyship. Her mission for Building Allyship is to facilitate a space of connection, accountability, community learning, and to help others strengthen their voice and stance as allies in their own communities. Through her work with children and her efforts to help others become better allies, Jennifer is furthering her desire to create a diverse and inclusive space she calls Dr. Jpop’s Neighborhood.

Do we develop a system to ensure that we are truly evolving from our experience, not just repeating it? In this lecture, we will dive into strategies to develop your clinical brain for improved outcomes and long term sustainable professional growth.

  • Define key variables that influence our decision making in the clinic
  • Establish principles to improve decision making accuracy
  • Develop a self auditing process to accelerate learning and professional growth
  • Define factors leading to burnout and how to avoid these pitfalls

Beyond “Just Load It”: A Comprehensive Guide to Exercise Selection, Categorization, and Modification

Dr. Michael Reinhardt, PT, DPT

The Presentation

Dr. Reinhardt will be diving deep into a topic that is just as much an art as it is a science -- how to refine and streamline your exercise selection process. This presentation is in response to the ubiquitous questions of, "Why are you doing this exercise? Why did you choose this over something else?"

By creating an adaptable mental model for exercise categorization, selection, and modification we can reduce the cognitive burden on coaches and clinicians while enhancing other forms of decision making. This will be far from your "typical" discussion of exercise. It will challenge you to ask better questions while seeking a deeper grasp of, "what are we ultimately trying to achieve?"

  • The Necessity For Building Exercise Frameworks
  • Exercise Selection Principles
  • Foundational Movement Archetypes
  • Exercise Modifications
